Why I’m building a ring, not a watch.

The smartwatch market is massive, but the finger unlocks something a wrist can’t. Why I’m betting on a ring as the IO device of the future.

People keep asking me: why a ring?

The smartwatch market is massive, over 160 million units ship every year. So why bet on a tiny band on your finger that doesn’t even have a screen?

Because a ring unlocks so much more. The finger is something much bigger than people realize.

A ring is the kind of device you forget you’re wearing. You sleep in it, shower in it, work out in it, and the battery lasts longer. That kind of continuous wear changes what’s possible.

Think about the last time a doctor checked your oxygen. The little clip went on your finger. It’s a natural place to listen to the body, and a ring gets to stay there day and night.

But here’s what really gets me excited: the finger isn’t just a place to measure. It’s the most natural interface we have. You point, gesture, snap, tap, pinch, twist. Touchscreens or not, the finger is how humans interact with the world. A ring sits at the source of all that expression, and with the right combination of hardware and software, it can understand what you’re doing without you ever pulling out a phone.

Swipe to skip a song. A gesture to dim the lights. Tap to take a voice note. Simple, intuitive movements that feel like they should have always existed. No phone, no screen, no “hey Alexa.” Just your finger. We’re not building a tool you pick up and put down. We’re extending what your hands already do.

Most smart rings today are passive. They track sleep, heart rate, recovery. We do that too. But Magic isn’t just a sensor. It’s the mouse and keyboard of the future. Motion tracking understands your gestures. A microphone hears your voice. Together, the ring doesn’t just read your body, it lets you interact with the world around you.

Of course I’m going to quote Arthur C. Clarke: “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” That’s not just our namesake, it’s the bar. When you wave your hand and your living room responds, when you whisper a reminder and it’s just there later, when technology disappears and all that’s left is what it does for you. That’s what we’re building.

The market is exploding too. The smart ring market has grown nearly 5x, from under a million units in 2023 to over 4 million in 2025. Projections have the category reaching anywhere from $2B to $4B by the early 2030s. Motion tracked rings have been tried before, but the technology and market weren’t ready. It is now.

We’re building something that seamlessly merges the digital and physical worlds. The IO device of the future. We’re building the Magic Ring. We’re early and building fast. If you’re feeling what I’m feeling, I want to hear from you. Follow the journey or better yet, join it.
